Why a top level page on taking a break, you ask? It's one of those things I rediscovered when going fully remote that is incredibly powerful, yet almost frowned upon in office environments. The goal of a good break is to change context to unblock yourself, benefit your health, connect with someone else, or just to turn off for a bit. Whatever you do, don't just switch to another glowing square, continue sitting to try and look busy, or scroll endless feeds. Here are some ideas that work for me within a reasonable 10-20 minute timeframe:
- Go for a walk. Be in awe of nature even if it's among just a few trees on a busy street.
- Get in a game of fetch or a quick walk with your dog.
- Make a coffee/tea or if you are able to walk to the nearest shop do that and order from a human. Be sure to smile.
- Do some squats, push ups, planks, or situps for 5 minutes.
- Close your eyes and take a 20 minute nap. Don't forget to set an alarm.
- Do some eye exercises.
- Do some deep breathing exercises.
- Clean some dishes from breakfast that were left by the sink or all those toys all over the living room. Bring some small amount of order into your space.
Any other ideas that work for you to add to the list? Let me know.
